Have you caught the sweet potato toast bug? It’s become one of the most popular food trends on social media, thanks to Kelsey Preciado, blogger behind Little Bits Of. This is a great alternative for those who follow the Paleo lifestyle or are looking for a gluten-free toast option. But really, it’s so yummy, anyone should give it a try! See my three favorite ways to make it below.
If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I’ve finally jumped on the sweet potato train. It took me a while to get there, but I’m here and there’s no going back now!
Some food trends that gain popularity seem to be too much work than it’s worth, but these are worth all the extra time spent waiting around by the toaster, I promise.
So what’s so great about the sweet potato?
Let’s look at some fast facts before diving right into how to make the perfect slice of sweet potato toast.
For starters, they are:
- Gluten-free
- A great alternative for those who follow the paleo lifestyle
- The perfect compliment to almost any way you enjoy your toast because of the sweetness of the vegetable
- A fantastic source of Vitamin A (hello healthy eyes and bright skin!) and Vitamin C (the essential cold and flu fighter)
- A great way to fight sugar cravings!
Sweet potatoes are also an excellent source of the antioxidant beta-carotene. Did you know it’s recommended to include 3-5 grams of fat with your sweet potato intake to reap the full benefits of this powerful antioxidant? Avocado sweet potato toast or slices drizzled with nut butter takes care of this for you!
Now, how to make the perfect slice of sweet potato toast…
My first attempt left me sorely disappointed. The slices were hard, crunchy and to be honest, I wasn’t a fan of the raw taste.
My second attempt had me swooning over the trendy toast, and a few more rounds in the toaster made all the difference.

So what’s the secret? Slice your sweet potato into 1/4” slices. Then, toast them on HIGH about three times. Kelsey recommends two, but I found that three allowed them to get soft in the middle and browned on the outside. Just the way I like it!
Now that we know how to make the perfect toast, let’s talk about the toppings. Let’s be honest, this is where the real magic happens!

Toast #1: Keep it simple and top with almond butter and banana slices. Put some almond butter on another slice and make it a sandwich while you’re at it!
Toast #2: The classic avocado toast with a poached egg on top. Mash 1/2 small avocado with a squeeze of lime juice and spread on the sweet potato toast. Then top with a poached egg and sprinkle with salt! This has been my go-to breakfast lately.
Toast #3: Nothing goes better than sweet potatoes and maple, am I right? We’re getting a little crazy with this one by mixing 2 Tablespoons of tahini with 1 teaspoon maple syrup. Spread on the toast and top with apple slices! It’s like fall on a plate.
