How to Cut an Onion step-by-step tutorial

One of the most basic culinary techniques that can make a huge difference in cooking is knowing how to cut an onion the right way. I’ve got the secret for saving time to avoid crying while cutting an onion in this step-by-step video tutorial! 

Spoiler alert: I can’t claim this method for how to cut an onion as my own, but it’s one of my favorite knife skills techniques I teach in live cooking classes and during individual cooking lessons. Every one of us has probably cut an onion before, but seeing if you’ve been cutting onions the right way is the real test. I’ve had participants claim that this technique alone was worth attending class for! 

How to Cut an Onion the Right Way 

In this step-by-step video tutorial, I’m going to walk you through how to cut an onion the right way. This method will save time and help you avoid crying while cutting an onion. 

Hi there!
1
Cut off the end opposite the root to create a flat surface for further chopping.

Chop the onion in half and peel off the skin.

Place onion flat side down and slice through while keeping root intact.
4
Chop thin slices, angling your knife as you work down along the sides of the onion.
5
Turn the onion the other way and chop through to create dices of onion.

I see a lot of chefs and cooking show hosts add an extra step by slicing the onion horizontally once sliced and before creating diced pieces. As you can see in the video tutorial, this step is unnecessary if you angle your knife as you work around the sides of the onion instead of cutting straight down, leaving behind larger pieces on the ends. 

In my opinion, cutting the onion horizontally can lead to a greater mess and increase your risk for accidental injury. No thank you.
