With summer in full-force and temps at an all-time high, my blender is always out and ready to whip up a smoothie on a moments notice. Smoothie bowls have become all the rage among health enthusiasts because they are simple to make and a sure way to get a variety of nutrients in every, errr, slurp. There’s just something about eating a smoothie from a bowl that is even more satisfying and delicious than the traditional cup and straw.
I’ve rounded up four of my favorite smoothie bowl recipes for you to try depending on what you’re feeling like today. Fruity? Check. Dessert-like? Check. Feeling green? Check. Each recipe will make one large serving, or two smaller, snack-size servings. Toppings are totally optional, but definitely recommended. Enjoy!
Pomegranate Berrylicious Smoothie
This smoothie is inspired by the acai smoothie bowl at Barnie’s CoffeeKitchen, one of my favorite treats on a lazy weekend morning. The pomegranate juice and berries in this recipe will give you a healthy dose of antioxidants, while the protein from the yogurt will help keep you fuller longer.
What you will need:
- 1/2 c. Greek yogurt, divided in half
- 1/2 c. pomegranate juice
- 1/2 c. frozen blueberries
- Handful of frozen strawberries (about 8)
- Handful of spinach or kale
- Water if needed
Combine all of the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. In a bowl, scoop ¼ c. Greek yogurt in the bottom and pour the smoothie over it. Top with sliced strawberries, blueberries and a sprinkle of your favorite granola.
Decadent Chocolate Almond Smoothie
This flavor combination is a tribute to my deep love for chocolate almond spread. Chocolate + almonds + coconut – what’s not to love? This recipe was also the favorite of the day while taste testing in the FitLiving kitchen.
What you will need:
- 1 /2 frozen or fresh avocado
- 1 frozen banana
- 1/2 c. light coconut milk
- 1 scoop chocolate or vanilla ALOHA protein powder* or brand of choice
- 1 T. cocoa powder if using vanilla-flavored protein powder
- 1 T. espresso powder
Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. The mixture should be thick, but you can always add a little water to get things moving. The avocado in this recipe makes for a thick and creamy texture – perfect for eating out of a bowl! Top with shaved or shredded unsweetened coconut, chopped almonds for a little crunch, and banana slices.
Green Monster Smoothie
Green smoothies are one of my favorite drinks to make because of the added nutrients from the greens. Have no fear – if you are a green drink newbie, I promise you’ll love this recipe. You can’t even taste the “greens”!
What you will need:
- Handful of greens (spinach, kale, dandelion greens, etc.)
- 1/2 frozen or fresh avocado
- 1 frozen kiwi
- 1/2 c. frozen pineapple chunks
- 1 T. honey
- 8 oz. coconut water or filtered water
- Optional: ALOHA Daily Good Greens*
Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Add more water if the mixture is too thick. Pour into a bowl and top with extra pineapple chunks and chia seeds for a little omega-3 action. Enjoy!
Banana Cream Pie Smoothie
Who doesn’t love dessert for breakfast? I don’t know about you, but I love all things banana, especially when it comes to sweet things. Warning: this smoothie is so good, you might find yourself making it at all hours of the day. Just sayin’.
What you will need:
- About 2 frozen bananas
- 1/2 c. light coconut milk
- 1 scoop ALOHA vanilla protein powder* or brand of choice
- 1 T. ground flaxseed
- Splash of vanilla extract
Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Pour into a bowl and top with a crushed graham crackers and banana slices. If you are feeling a little fancy, caramelized bananas would be a fantastic addition!
