Friday Favorites: 3 Things I’m Loving in my Pursuit of Healthy Living

three favorite things that have helped me in my journey towards healthier living

It’s my birthday tomorrow, so how about we celebrate with a little edition of Friday favorites? This past year, I have been focused on changing my daily habits as I learn about what it means to live a healthy lifestyle – for me. What I need in my life to be the healthiest I can be might be different than what you need, and I am continually shifting and changing to adapt to this thing we call, “life”. So let’s get started, shall we? Check out these three things I’m currently loving in my pursuit of healthy living below!

3 favorite things in my pursuit of healthy living

Green Smoothies

If you’re following me on Instagram, this should come as no surprise to you. I am obsessed with them and after participating in the 30-day green smoothie challenge I make one almost every day for my husband and I! Why do I love them so much? Because they are chock-full of nutrients found in a variety of fruits and vegetables which helps provide a boost in energy first thing in the morning or when I get hit with the afternoon slump. Plus, the combination of ingredients is endless, making each refreshing sip different than the last one!

3 things that have helped me in my journey towards healthier livingA month unlimited at The Bar Method

My mom and I are headed to LA for a fitness-inspired getaway in a month, and to get ready for it, we signed up for a month of unlimited classes at The Bar Method. I am usually not a frequent visitor of boutique fitness classes (hey, I’m counting my pennies over here!) and prefer a good HIIT/strength training routine to get my sweat on, but I’ve gladly welcomed the change! It’s fun to switch it up every now and then to avoid getting stuck in a rut with my fitness routine.

And don’t be fooled, those teeny little weights can do some damage (in a good way!) and I’m definitely learning to “embrace the shakes”. Hello, jello legs! Are you looking to try something new? I would highly recommend trying out a barre class – it’s a great workout for long lean muscles, and a strong core. I love this post from Running with the Sunrise on what to expect during your first barre class.

Waking Up Earlier

I NEVER thought I would say this. I actually enjoy waking up earlier than I’m used to. Things have been busy around here and in trying to fit it all in and still enjoy some “me time”, I’ve found that waking up earlier helps me accomplish both of those things. Plus, some of my most productive hours are right when I wake up! I’ve been setting my alarm for 6:15 am most mornings, grabbing a cup of coffee, and settling in on the couch for a good hour before my husband wakes up to enjoy cuddles with my fur baby and to catch up on my reading.

The funny thing about this is that I am not a morning person (at all) but am finding myself craving these times in the morning. This proves to me that you can do anything you set your mind to, with a little willpower and consistency.

  1. Happy Friday, Carly! I’m with you on the green smoothies, workouts and waking up early. That’s my life right there. So cool you’re doing a month at The Bar Method. I haven’t been to a barre class in a while, and am always shocked at how tough that burning feeling can be with light weights. It’s such a good low-impact way to work the muscles. I hope you have an awesome weekend!

    1. Thanks, Ashley! Hope you are having a fabulous weekend, too. I don’t always do barre classes (they can add up!), but they are such a fun way to switch it up. The burn is REAL! ha 🙂

    1. Exactly! Given my husband sleeps until about 11 am on weekend mornings (he is a late night owl), I have a good 4 -5 hours before he gets up!

  2. I need to wake up earlier again! It makes such a huge difference… I have been slacking since its the summer and my kids dont have to be at camp until 9! 🙂

  3. Nice. I’ve been wanting to try a Barre class. My new thing I’m loving is running. I never ever thought I would say that, but I’m really feeling like it’s helping me get healthy faster. Thanks for sharing you three things.

    1. Hi! Congrats on starting your running journey – I have a post going up tomorrow about what running means to me. It is always my go-to form of cardio/exercise. Hope you had a great weekend!

  4. I love green smoothies, but always have the same one every day, so I signed up for the 30 day challenge you did to hopefully learn some new recipes. And I totally agree with you about waking up early. I usually wake up before my husband so I can walk the dog and then enjoy some ‘me time’ on the couch with some coffee. Enjoy your weekend!

    1. Patricia – Yay! I’m so happy to hear you signed up for the challenge. It really got me outside of my green smoothie comfort zone and gave me some great ideas! Hope you are having a fabulous weekend 🙂

  5. I’ve never done a Barre class before, but have been curious. What I do for fitness: 5 days a week at the gym during my lunch break, green smoothies, & veggie based lunches.

    1. Sarah – You should try one out! They are so fun and a great way to switch it up! Sounds like you have a healthy routine going!

  6. Happy almost birthday!!! : ) I’m trying to live a healthier lifestyle also so these tips are great!!! I’ve always been somewhat of an early riser, but lately I’ve found myself laying in bed until 9AM and even laying around that extra hour as made me slower throughout the day! So I’m starting to wake up earlier and get things done early – it’s helping too!! Thanks for sharing : )

    1. Thanks, Adriana! Glad you enjoyed the post. Also – I loved your post on Instagram following. Super helpful tips!

  7. I completely agree about mornings. I am not a morning person either, but lately I’ve been waking up earlier on the weekends and I actually love being the first one up in the house. I grab my coffee, turn on Food Network (naturally) and snuggle with my pup before the rest of the house wakes up. Mornings are suddenly a beautiful thing.

  8. Waking up early is a must for me and I have always loved it! And green smoothies and juices are always a go to for me when I’m feeling sluggish! Thanks for sharing!!

  9. I never thought I would be an early riser either, but I had a weird week this month where my body just popped awake around 4:30 or 5:00 and I could not go back to sleep. I definitely didn’t feel rested, but I got SO much done before the sun even came up. Now if I could only be more consistent about it. I do love that quiet feeling in the house before anyone else is awake…

    1. The quiet feeling is so peaceful. I feel like if I get a lot done in the morning, I can give myself more of a break in the evening and spend some quality time with my husband. For me, it’s all about fitting my priorities in!

    1. Congrats on getting your certification, Chrissa! I’ve thought about getting mine in the future. I am loving the classes and definitely embracing my shakes… ha!

  10. We’re big smoothie fans too..I find it’s one of the easiest ways to get our veggies down:) I also love your idea of waking up early. I am so not a morning person usually, but I do need some alone time each day. That may just be the perfect solution!
Happy early birthday too! I hope you have a wonderful day tomorrow! 🙂

    1. Joscelyn – I am the same way. I crave alone time and find myself actually looking forward to my early mornings. It’s so peaceful to be up before anyone else with a cup of coffee in hand and catching up on work or reading!

  11. I just started waking up earlier as well, giving me time to get back into my morning routine of loving on my fur babies, doing my devotional and enjoying a leisurely healthy breakfast. Im going to check out your green smoothies now! Thanks for sharing

  12. Happy early birthday Carly! These are great favorites! I am yearning to be able to actually get up earlier in the morning. I will not give up though! Glad these have been working for you! Thanks for sharing!

  13. I love my mornings! I never used to be early riser, but I now fully enjoy that peaceful time…Lots of coffee; work on the computer; a good workout; and I am ready to rock the day! And yes to green smoothies…XOXO

    1. Yes! That is exactly how my mornings go (well, sometimes the workout takes place later after work). I actually look forward to my early mornings and I never thought I would be able to say that. xo!

  14. I enjoy waking up early too and getting stuff done, but that’s because my son wakes up super early and starts crawling all over me so might as well be productive!

    1. I told myself I was going to get up earlier for the longest time… like, for years ha! I just had to commit to it and DO IT. It helps to have something to look forward to when you wake up 🙂

  15. I need to try some green smoothies. LOVE barre classes…I need about 29 more classes to sign the 100 class barre:)

    1. Wow! Way to go, Kim! I am obsessed with green smoothies. They are delicious, give me a boost in energy, and make me feel so healthy – on the inside and out!

    1. Cynthia, you are so right! It does help set the mood for the rest of the day. If I’m productive during the morning, I feel much more motivated throughout the day.

  16. I have done weightlifting for the last 5-6 year and I love it. I keep thinking that I need to try yoga out but I just don’t get into classes. I WISH that I could wake up earlier during the school year to lift before work I get a WAY better workout first thing in the morning and I wake up at about 7 during the summer – but needing to be up by 6 anyways for school I think I would just be bitchy the rest of the day from lack of sleep- it just doesn’t happen to make it to bed in time to get a full 8 hours if I wake up any earlier!

    1. I can totally relate! My goal was to get up early in the morning to workout before work, but I’m finding that I crave my quiet time instead! I typically do weight lifting as well, but sometimes it’s fun to switch it up 🙂

  17. I keep saying that I need to start making green smoothies…I need to just do it! I am not good about eating enough fruits and veggies.

I just passed a Pure Barre place when I went to the pool store yesterday. I’ve been curious about them! Once I finish my acupuncture for my back I should be ready to try a class.

    1. Dana – Time to get on the green smoothie train! 😉 They are so easy. I make 2 servings and put one in the fridge for later. I haven’t been to Pure Barre, but they are all pretty similar. It’s a great way to build long and lean muscles!

  18. Happy Birthday! So great to meet up with you from The Blog Love Project. Thanks for the Friday Tips. Will look at some recipes for the shakes for sure . Thanks for stopping by at BeFedAgain too.
    Happy Happy,

    Brooke

  19. This really sounds like something I need to add into my daily routine!! I love smoothies but I don’t make them often enough!! Thank you for sharing! xx

    1. They are so easy and a great way to pack in the nutrients! I make two servings and put on in a mason jar with lid in the fridge for later 🙂

  20. Love barre but don’t go nearly enough. Also love green smoothies and I’m a morning person by nature. There’s something refreshing and soothing about waking up as the sun rises and having a quiet house to myself before the rest of the family wakes up. Love it! A few of my favorite healthy habits are meal planning and prepping, cooking (healthfully of course), and always getting in 4 days of fitness 🙂

    1. I totally agree, Giselle! It is so peaceful in the morning and once I have my cup of coffee, I’m ready to get moving! Those are all great healthy habits! I love planning out my meals for the week so that I ensure we stay on track with healthy eating 🙂

  21. I so wish I had a barre class at a convenient location that I could try! Sounds like a great, challenging workout. And I totally agree with the green smoothies and waking up early! 🙂 I love quiet mornings with my green tea or coffee.

    1. They are becoming more and more popular, so maybe you will get one in your area soon! Quiet mornings are the best 🙂

  22. I love green smoothies and need to make them more!! I also love waking up early even though I hate it in the moment LOL. My daughter is a very early riser so I don’t have a choice but I get so much more done!

    1. Haha! When I get up early, I tell myself I’m preparing for when we have a family and then there’s no choice 😉 I do love how productive I am during the early hours, though, which makes it worth it.

  23. If I don’t go out the night before on a weekend, I LOVE waking up early, going for a short run, and heading to the farmers market (or cooking a nice breakfast). It’s a lot of reflective “me” time that I don’t do throughout the week. HOPE YOU HAD A NICE BIRTHDAY!!
