holiday gift guide

Every year as I think about my Christmas wish list, it usually consists mostly of some new kitchen gadget, recipe book, or gourmet food that I’ve been dying to try. Can you relate or do you know someone in your family whose list might look similar?

Every Christmas when we were younger, my mom made it a tradition to choose an item that she would buy my brother and I that would start a “collection” for each of us. For my brother it was pocket knives. For me, it was ice cream scoopers. Yes, you read that correctly. To date, I have a total of 16 ice cream scoopers in their own designated kitchen drawer at my parent’s house (thanks, mom!). I guess you might say I had an addiction to ice cream growing up? Ha!

In efforts to make my collection a little more health-friendly, and well, because I think I have enough ice cream scoopers, I now have a collection of kitchen knives that continues to grow each year. Whether it’s an ice cream scooper or a knife under the Christmas tree, that’s usually not the only food-related gift waiting for me. And I have a feeling that this year will be no exception!

In the list below of must-have gadgets and items for every foodie to have in her kitchen, some are on my own list this year and some I already have and just can’t live without!

My Top 10 Health-Inspired Gifts for Foodies

Wood cutting board. I received a nice wood cutting board when I got married and I use it all the time. It’s the perfect addition to your kitchen to have out on display (because they are so pretty!) and then it’s there when you need it to chop up fruits and veggies. I would not recommend placing raw meat on the cutting board because wood is porous and could harbor unwanted bacteria. I love this one made by John Boos (if you really want to impress!) or this bamboo one that is more budget-friendly.

Flavor-infused olive oils. I have a truffle-infused olive oil from Trader Joe’s that I have sitting out on my countertop with my other cooking oils and I use it frequently. The flavor is to die for and adds such a nice extra somethin’ somethin’ to the dish. This set from Williams Sonoma has so many yummy flavors! I find that more olive oil tasting rooms are popping up which can be a great place to find some fun and unique flavors!

Citrus Juicer. Ever since I have watched Rachel Ray cooking shows as a teen, I’ve wanted one of these. We have one in the juice commercial kitchen and it makes my life so much easier! Why I haven’t gotten one by now, I don’t know. The handheld juicer gets so much juice out of the lime or lemon that otherwise might have been missed squeezing it the old-fashioned way. I’m not a big fan of gadgets in my kitchen drawers, but I would gladly make room for this one! We have this one at work and it’s also on my Christmas list.

Spiralizer. Spiralized vegetables seem to be the latest and greatest food trend lately. They are a fun way to add an unexpected twist to your meals and a great option for creating “zoodles” for those who are gluten-free. This is definitely on my Christmas wish list this year and I can’t wait to play with (my future) spiralizer in the kitchen! I’m thinking a pesto fettuccini made with zoodles might just have to be in the works the minute I can get my hands on one of these bad boys.

Salt block. I don’t own one of these, but they make my eyes light up every time I see one. I mean, just look how pretty they are! They can be used as a serving platform for various foods or can be used to sear quick-cooking foods when heating to high temperatures on the grill to infuse the foods with a natural salt flavor. These pink Himalayan salt blocks would make a great addition to any foodie’s kitchen!

Cast Iron Skillet. I recently bought one cast iron skillet,  and while I’ve only used it twice, I’m kicking myself for not getting one sooner! The perfect tool for caramelizing vegetables for a breakfast hash or side dish, these skillets are great to have on hand. And guess what?! You don’t have to buy a crazy expensive one to reap the full benefits (although this one by Le Creuset makes me drool). Mine was about $30 dollars and works like a charm. You can find one similar here.

Microplane Zester. If you don’t have one of these, run to the store and buy yourself one and then get your foodie friend one later. They are that good! I use mine for everything, from grating citrus zest, to cheese, to garlic and more. They come in different sizes and I recommend getting several. The ones I have are this one and this one.

ALOHA Herbal Teas. I have recently started incorporating more teas into my daily routine and these blends from ALOHA are delicious! I love the combination of organic ingredients in each of them that include both tea leaves and superfoods. An added bonus? They are labeled by your health needs! For example, they have a purifying blend, a beauty blend and a lovers blend to (ahem) spice things up. I have purchased the tea collection for several gifts which includes powdered organic coconut water to add even more hydrating health benefits to your cup of tea. If you are interested in purchasing your own gift sets, use code “fitliving” at checkout for 20% off your first order!

Hand Immersion Blender. During soup season, this is a great tool to have on hand. It is much easier to stick an immersion blender into a pot and puree away then it is to dump the soup in a blender to get a smooth and creamy texture. I use mine frequently for soups, making purees and my chocolate avocado pudding! This one from Cuisinart is fabulous and I love all of the fun colors to choose from.

Le Creuset Dutch Oven. The Le Creuset cookware is quite possibly the most enviable among home cooks and chefs alike. I received a Dutch oven for my wedding and it is now my favorite thing to cook with, especially when cooking soups or stews. It’s big, cooks evenly and has yet to cause the garlic and onion to burn (which is so easy to do!). They are an investment, but one that you will cherish forever. You can find the one that I have here.

I hope this holiday gift guide for the healthy foodie in your life makes Christmas shopping less-stressful and more fun this year! Happy Holidays, friends.
